The Wine

Le Fabriche is a celebration of the region and the landscapes that surround the estate. It bears witness to a vision that sets out to transform wine into a legacy.
Driven by a desire to honour Maruggio’s millennia-old heritage,Rinaldo del Bonolaunched an ambitious project in 2020 to preserve, enhance and interpret the area’s biodiversity, based on a simple yet powerful conviction:wine is born of the earth, but takes shape through human sensitivity. This renewed, insightful wine culture, rooted in profound dialogue with nature, does not merely celebrate the past but also looks towards the future. With full respect for the passage of time and the richness of the village’s soils, theRiserva MarrubiuMwas born: aPrimitivo di Manduria DOCentrusted to the expertise ofMattia Vezzola, a leading oenologist on the Italian scene. His approach is rooted in knowledge and attentiveness, giving rise to a story with a strong sense of place that unfolds over time.
“The true value of wine lies not only in its immediate quality but also in its ability to stand the test of time, to evolve and reveal itself. Quality is the starting point; the ultimate goal is uniqueness.”
Mattia Vezzola, oenologist
MarrubiuM stems from an ideal triangle of people, inspiration and experience that together find meaning within a complex ecosystem.
The MarrubiuM vineyards are situated just a stone’s throw from the sea. Here thecenturies-old bushvines form the heart of the project. Rooted in calcareous-clay soils, they preserve the legacy left by the ancient Greeks and also represent the future. Alongside these head-trained vines, a number of trellis-trained vines complete the vineyard, yet it is the centuries-old bush vines that define the wine’s identity. Of the estate’s total 25 hectares,7 hectareshave been selected for their quality and suitability, under the careful guidance ofoenologist Mattia Vezzola, agronomist Pierluigi Donnaandworld-renowned nurseryman Pierre-Marie Guillaume, a pioneer in genetic research and selection. Together, they are furthering a mass selection project that draws on the heritage of historic vines dating back more than a hundred years, from which buds are taken for new grafts, thus preserving their original genetic identity. This patient and visionary work enables Le Fabriche to safeguard the quality and distinctive character of its wine over time, transforming the estate into atrue workshop of craftsmanship and innovation, where ancient knowledge and contemporary techniques come together to lend continuity to the history of the region.

The first vintage, from the year2022, is composed of85% Primitivoand15% Aglianico. This wine manifests a deep sense of connection between human beings and nature, between intuition and attentive care. An intense, elegant and well-structured red, it has been aged in white oak barriques and matured for a long time in the silence of the cellars, through a slow-ageing process that reflects Rinaldo del Bono’spromise of longevity.
The central importance of the soil guides every agronomic and viticultural decision. For Le Fabriche, step one is not the product but the dialogue between the land, the roots and the plant. The ongoing quest for harmonious balance evolves within the ecosystem.
MarrubiuM is the Latin name for amedicinal plantfrom which Maruggio – the village where the estate is located – also takes its name. The wine is a true expression of the richness and harmony of its home terrain: the calcareous-clay soils, the constant breeze and the proximity to the sea all contribute to theorganoleptic complexityof this wine.
Inspired by a vision of mindfulness and regeneration, we preserve the balance of the land, respecting its natural rhythms and fostering biodiversity alongside excellence in viticulture. The vines translate the essence of a harmonious ecosystem into fruit, where roots, wild flora, microfauna, wind and light all play important roles in writing the story of MarrubiuM.
“Biodiversity is our most valuable ally in working in harmony with nature and preserving the authenticity of our wines.”
Pierluigi Donna
Under the influence ofCapricorn, a sign dear to the Del Bono family, MarrubiuM charts a consistent, personal course that seeks to reveal the true spirit of the region. The approach to the vineyards is highlyeco-friendly;it protects biodiversity and utilizes advanced environmental monitoring techniques.
The vineyard is managed organically and with minimal intervention: we use copper, sulphur, kaolin, natural organic matter, and irrigation only when absolutely necessary.
No harsh chemicals, no soil depletion. In all that we do, respect for wildlife, microflora and soil vitality is an integral part of the genetic process.
The total production for 2022 is12,500 bottlesand200 magnums, all of which are numbered.
