MASSAL SELECTION OF CENTURY-OLD VINE

In the historic vineyard, certain vines have over the years demonstrated extraordinary vigour, well-balanced bunches, natural resistance to disease and consistent grape quality. These vines have been identified and marked, thanks to the expertise of the world-renowned nurserymanPierre-Marie Guillaume, so that the finest buds can be taken from them. This method of selection preserves the site’s original genetics rather than replacing it with industrial clones. Thus, the new vine inherits the same strength and identity as the centuries-old one.

From old vine stock to new planting

The selected buds are grafted onto American vine cuttings that have already been selected and acclimatised. New vines are therefore created using the DNA of the historic vines – the same genetics,the same characteristics, the same connection to the soil. The aim is simple yet powerful: to ensure that what has survived for a hundred years can live on for at least a hundred more.

THE IDENTITY OF THE “ALBERELLO”

The “alberello” bush-trained vine is the oldest and most authentic form ofApulian viticulture. It was brought here by the Greeks, and here it has found its ideal habitat. The vine grows low to the ground, close to the soil, protected from the heat and wind, and is able to thrive even in dry farming conditions. With few buds and small bunches, this system focuses not on quantity but on genetic heritage.

Sustainable evolution: trellised vines

In new vineyards,trellis-trainingreplaces the traditional bush-trained system not for questions of yield, but to ensure sustainable management. Trellis-training provides for lighter ground work, careful control of the canopy, reduced root stress and a better balance between light and shade. This evolution preserves genetic material while also adapting it to a more resilient model that respects the ecosystem.

Soil as the genetic code of the terroir

Genetic background is found not only in the plant itself but also in the soil that nourishes the plant. The roots penetratecracked limestone rocks, where they find moisture and natural thermal protection

Red earth
mineral-rich, well-drained, quicker to mature.

alluvial, rich in organic matter, slower to mature.

Biodiversity and natural balance

Centuries-old olive trees, Mediterranean scrub, thyme, mastic, carob, wild olive, fig and almond trees: a mosaic of vegetation that creates microclimates, provides a habitat for beneficial insects and fosters a natural balance. This is living biodiversity, not mere scenery. It protects the vines, sustains them and ensures that the agricultural system is self-sufficient in its ability to defend itself.

ECO-FRIENDLY CARE: NATURAL METHODS AND TREATMENTS

The cultivation methods areorganic and minimal. We use copper, sulphur, kaolin, natural organic matter, and irrigation only when strictly necessary. No invasive chemicals, no depletion of the soil. Respect for wildlife, microflora and soil vitality is an integral part of the cultivation process.
